Passport for Punta Cana

Travelers by Air

Air travel is the most popular way to travel to Punta Cana. Most visitors arrive on the island by air and land at the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Any U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling to the Dominican Republic by air will need to present a legal passport.

Simply owning a passport might not be enough; it’s also important to make sure that your passport meets certain requirements. First, it must be in good condition. This means no rips, tears, or alterations to it and no coloring or stickers added by kids! Your passport must also have at least one blank page for your entry stamp into the Dominican Republic.

A few months before your trip, take a look at the expiration date. It’s a good idea to make sure that your passport won’t expire within six months of the start of your trip. That way, if you were to need to extend your trip or you had an emergency, you’ll still be able to easily travel home afterward.

When you arrive in Punta Cana, before you can start enjoying your tropical getaway, you’ll need to go through customs. Before you arrive, you can fill out an E-Ticket online. This digital form is required for visitors entering and leaving the Dominican Republic. When you get to the airport, you’ll present both your passport and E-Ticket to the immigration officials.

You may be asked to present your return ticket at this time as well to prove that you intend to leave the Dominican Republic as stated. Your luggage may also be scanned by customs before you can exit the terminal to start your vacation.

Travelers by Cruise

Another way that you can visit Punta Cana is on a cruise. Punta Cana is a popular stop on many cruises through the Caribbean. The city of Punta Cana doesn’t have a cruise port, but you can travel there from other nearby ports in the Dominican Republic. La Romana and Amber Cove are the closest two cruise ports.

Passport requirements vary from cruise line to cruise line and even from cruise to cruise. However, many cruise lines require travelers to carry a valid passport, even for closed-loop cruises that start and end in a U.S. port. Even if a passport is not required, it’s still a good idea to travel with one just in case you need to leave your cruise and travel home from a foreign country. If you plan to leave the ship to travel to Punta Cana or if you plan to fly home from the Dominican Republic, having a passport is a definite must.

Some closed-loop cruises allow travelers to use alternative forms of identity besides passports, like a birth certificate and a government-issued photo ID. However, if you need to leave the cruise or want to travel home from a foreign country and don’t have a passport, this can be a big issue.

Do You Need a Visa to Go to Punta Cana?

U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling to the Dominican Republic do not need a visa as long as their stay is 30 days or less. Instead, you’ll need a tourist card. This card is often included in the cost of airfare when you book a flight to the Dominican Republic. In addition to this tourist card, you’ll also need to fill out an electronic ticket (E-Ticket) online before you arrive in the Dominican Republic. You’ll present this E-Ticket to officials along with your passport when you pass through immigration.

If you are not from the U.S. or Canada, a visa may be required to visit the Dominican Republic, even if you’re staying for less than 30 days. You can learn more about the country’s visa requirements here.

Punta Cana Entry Requirements for U.S. & Canadian Citizens

If you are a U.S. or Canadian citizen traveling to Punta Cana, this list of requirements will help you ensure that you have everything you need when you arrive:

  • Valid passport, valid for at least six months after your planned date of travel
  • Completed e-ticket form, completed online ahead of your arrival
  • Proof of return/onward travel
  • Address of accommodation
  • Funds for the stay

Until November 25, 2025, the Dominican Republic has relaxed its rules around passport expiration dates. Until that date, travelers will need a passport that is valid for the time that they plan to be in the Dominican Republic. You do not need a passport that is valid for six months from the start of your date. But after November 25, all travelers will need a passport with at least six months of validity from the date of the start of their trip.

Is It Safe to Travel to Punta Cana?

Punta Cana is generally safe for tourists, especially in resort areas. However, like any popular vacation destination, it’s important to take some precautions. Always use official taxis, and try to travel with groups whenever possible.

Avoid wearing or flashing valuables, especially when you’re in shopping centers or busy areas. Try to limit carrying a purse, or carry one that you can safely hold on to in busy areas. Keep your wallet in a front pocket in busy areas as well. Never leave a drink unattended, even at a resort, and make sure to watch as your drink is prepared when at nightclubs or outside of resort areas.

Never hand your passport over as a deposit or for a hold. Before you travel, make several copies of your passport and store these in a safe place that’s separate from where you store your passport, just in case. If you’re traveling in a group, have several different people hold copies of everyone’s passport.

Booking excursions to local attractions is a great alternative to renting a vehicle or trying to book a taxi. Many resorts offer excursions that pick up and drop off at your resort to make it even easier for you to get around while in Punta Cana.
