Ocho Rios – A Jamaican Jewel
About Ocho Rios
Jamaica – a sun-kissed island filled with rhythmic reggae sounds, spicy exotic flavors and the Patois language. Located in Saint Ann Parish, Ocho Rios was once a sleepy fishing village. That all changed in 1962, when James Bond came to town to film “Dr. No” – and there was no turning back! Today, cruise ships and tourists visit this tropical paradise to enjoy luxury mega-resorts dotting local beaches. Be sure to sample some jerk chicken (spicier than your average barbecue version) or Jamaica’s national dish, ackee and saltfish, at local eateries. Don’t forget to party under the stars at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville!
Nearby Explorations
Dunn’s River Falls
Dunn’s River Falls is a naturally created “staircase” waterfall and is roughly 600 feet wide and 1,000 feet tall. It sits in the midst of a lush rain forest that’s perfect for hiking! Hold hands with fellow climbers and follow your guide up the falls, all while finding half-hidden lagoons along the way. Bring your bathing suit! Head back down to where the rushing water meets the sea and watch the stunning Caribbean sunset!
James Bond Beach
Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was a frequent visitor to Jamaica. That famed secret agent with a penchant for martinis (shaken not stirred), has his own namesake beach on the Oracabessa Peninsula. Swim in the turquoise colored waters, stroll the golden sands, and watch one of the jazz or reggae shows on the expansive lawn. Fleming’s house is still there today, as is the Moonraker’s bar!
Luminous Lagoon Tour

Roughly an hour’s drive from Ocho Rios is the Glistening Waters Lagoon, filled with dinoflagellates (microscopic animals that are bio-luminescent). Take a night cruise and watch as their light cells emit a soft bluish-green glow. Even jump in for a swim so the water lights up around you – something that continues to awe visitors from around the world! Tours are available out of Ocho Rios, some including visits to the town of Falmouth!
