Sam Sharpe Square

A visit to Sam Sharpe Square in downtown Montego Bay is a must for history buffs. The area was renamed in 1976 for Sam Sharpe, a Jamaican hero and Baptist minister who played a vital role in the Christmas Rebellions of 1831. Fighting for emancipation, he encouraged slaves to protest against working on Christmas day.

The cobble stoned square showcases a bronze depiction of Sharpe preaching to his followers. Other highlights include the Cage, a small building that served as a jail for troublemakers and runaways, and the Montego Bay museum. There are also nearby cafes and restaurants if you want to grab a bite to eat.
