In the 19th century, freed African-American slaves built the wooden church. The area of Puerto Plato has the most historical sites in the country. The Ruinas de la Isabela is the ruins of the first European settlement built by Christopher Columbus and are the site of the first Catholic mass. Or, for a bit of lighter fun, take a tour and taste the rum at the Brugal Rum Factory where the spirit is aged in white oak barrels.
