Top Riviera Maya Ruins You Won’t Want to Miss

Riviera Maya’s incredible Mayan ruins have been attracting history enthusiasts for decades. And there’s more to these sites than just the ruins themselves – they also give you a glimpse into local culture, and come surrounded by picture-perfect natural beauty.

Tulum Ruins

Perched on 12-meter-high cliffs overlooking a beach and the Caribbean Sea, Tulum Ruins are well-known for their photogenic views as well as their history. The site was once a busy trading port, and was inhabited as early as the 6th century! These days, the ruins are the third most visited site in Mexico. You’ll want to climb the steep steps to take in the sea views from what remains of the old Castillo, and check out the well-preserved mural in the Temple of the Frescoes.

Stay at the family-friendly Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa, and you’ll be just under half an hour’s drive away from the ruins.

Coba Mayan Ruins

These mystical, wild ruins are among some of the lesser-trodden sites in Riviera Maya. In fact, if you get there early, you might even have the whole place to yourself. Set in lush, monkey-roamed jungle next to four natural lakes, the ruins include the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula, which was once climbable. Excavation is ongoing at this site, and archaeologists expect much more to be uncovered in the coming years, so there’s a real sense of adventure and discovery here. Hire a bike or take a stroll along the overgrown ancient roads and see what you can find!

Ek Balam Ruins

Ek Balam Ruins are less crowded than some of the other sites on this list, but they’re just as rich in detail. The unique site can be traced back as far as 300BC. Climb the 32-meter-high Acropolis, take a peek at an impressive Mayan tomb, and check out well-preserved hieroglyphic carvings. If you fancy even more of an adventure, you can follow a hiking trail in the jungle that surrounds the ruins. Then, cool off with a dip in one of the magical nearby cenotes. The site’s just outside Riviera Maya, about a 35-minute drive away from the colonial city of Valladolid.

Chichen Itza Ruins

No list of must-see Mayan ruins would be complete without a mention of Chichen Itza. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it’s so culturally significant that it’s earned itself UNESCO World Heritage status and is the most visited site in the whole of Mexico! The most recognisable monument here is the Pyramid of Kukulcan. Once you’ve ticked that off, don’t forget to check out the Temple of the Warriors, the Market Place and the collection of intricately decorated platforms. There’s a sacred cenote to see here, too – although this one’s not suitable for swimming in.

El Meco Ruins

If you’re staying in Cancun, don’t miss El Meco ruins. This coastal spot is smaller and quieter than some of the other Riviera Maya Mayan ruins, and it’s a bit of a hidden gem. The tall pyramid – which is similar to the one at Chichen Itza – is the main attraction here, and the whole thing’s surrounded by bird life, so keep your eyes peeled if you’re a keen nature lover.

Dreams Vista Cancun Golf & Spa Resort is a top choice if you’re looking for an all inclusive hotel nearby – it’s a contemporary beachfront spot only a 10-minute drive away from the ruins.

Mayan Ruins of Xel-Há

This small site is perched right next to the famous Xel-Há natural water park and a scattering of cenotes, so if you fancy visiting, you can make a full day of it. The settlement has a strong trading history thanks to its coastal position. Spend an hour strolling around its small stone temples, check out the red-and-blue painted murals, and learn about the ancient spiritual practices that happened at the site.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay nearby, Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Xcarat Arte are both great options – they’re only about half an hour away by car.

Xcaret Ruins

Situated within Xcarat Park, these pre-Hispanic ruins let you combine sightseeing with cultural shows and eco attractions like zip-lining and swimming in picturesque cenotes. You don’t have to visit the park to see the ruins, though. And as one of the least-visited archaeological sites in the country, it’s usually pretty peaceful.

The all inclusive Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Hotel Xcarat Arte are both around a 30-minute drive away, and if you stay at either stunning resort, you’ll get free access to Xcarat’s nature parks and tours!

Lesser-known Mexican Mayan Ruins in the Area

While the most famous sites are certainly worth a spot on your vacation itinerary, don’t pass up the chance to see some of the smaller ruins near Riviera Maya. These hidden gems are often more authentic than some of the big names, and they come with fewer crowds, too.
